This is a first in Niger: a French NGO has been responsible for the management of the country's largest nature reserve, Termit and Tin Toumma. Created in 2012, it extends over 97,000 km² between Agadez in the north, Zinder in the center-south and Diffa near the Lake Chad basin in the south-east.
In terms of surface area, it is the largest land reserve in Africa. Larger than the largest French region, New Aquitaine (84,000 km²).
The region is a sanctuary for many endangered species such as the dama gazelle, the addax or the Saharan cheetah. “The reserve's wildlife is still present, but it is highly endangered,” said Valérie Collin, the secretary of the NGO. The threats are threefold. First, poaching, of course, but also overgrazing, which Noé will monitor using drones. Then, the threat comes from oil exploitation, with active oil fields in the heart and periphery of the reserve.
