Study on the perception of biodiversity
Biodiversity provides local communities with the resources they need to meet their needs in vital areas such as food and health, to name but a few. Communities have capitalized on important knowledge and practices that are reflected in various ways of use.
Indeed, biological resources are used in multiple uses by communities but sometimes without the instinct of conservation. Also, the basic needs of rural populations are mostly met by these biological resources through agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing and aquaculture.
It has been shown that biodiversity is necessary for a balanced diet, but today we are seeing very clear transformations within communities, all leading to a loss of dietary and medicinal diversity as well as the degeneration of their role.
Therefore, the use of biodiversity is an indicator that can have several facets (positive as well as negative) in the face of the issue of conservation and sustainability to meet the needs of communities in the medium or long term. Among other things, for these reasons, the use of cash for food and medicinal purposes was selected in Niger's SNPA/DB as an important indicator.
The trend in the use of species and the different visions of use by communities are all elements that make it possible to assess whether the perception of biodiversity is in favor of conservation and the sustainability of use or the opposite. The diagnosis, which will be carried out in this framework, will make it possible to verify the level of perception of biodiversity by communities on the basis of the indicators. These will help to better assess whether or not this perception of communities is in favor of the sustainable use of biodiversity.
The results of the investigations will certainly be a decision-making tool so that the competent authorities can take adequate measures in this area.
