Niger River

Image removed.Since August 12, 2020, the Niger River had exceeded the red alert level. Following the alerts given by the Directorate of Hydrology from July and well before on seasonal forecasts, the authorities tried to reinforce and raise the protective dikes, which had generally lasted for several days. Starting on Saturday, August 22, a new rise in the waters was observed due to the heavy rains that fell the previous days in the sub-basins upstream. On August 23, 2020, at a height of 659 cm, the dikes began to give way and subside in several places under the pressure of the water from the Niger River flood. The neighborhoods on the right bank located in the lower areas were the first to be flooded. In Harobanda (right bank) the water overflowed onto the tar towards the Total station by overtaking the AGRHYMET Regional Center which was completely flooded. An earthen dike was urgently erected on the edge of the tar in front of Abdou Moumouni University to contain the water. The rice fields downstream of the Kennedy du Riz du Niger bridge were totally flooded. Several roads near the river have been closed
