Awareness-raising workshop for Presidents of Municipal Councils and Civil Society Organizations on the Value and Promotion of Biodiversity
In Niger, local populations understand biological diversity through its agricultural, wildlife and plant components. Whereas this biodiversity is the diversity of all forms of animal and plant life. Indeed, biodiversity plays a fairly crucial role through the various services and goods they provide for the well-being of populations. However, these populations are not very aware of the issues associated with them as well as to ecosystem services and genetic diversity. In addition, it appears from the reports of the various meetings of the Technical Commission on Biological Diversity (CTDB) and from the studies carried out on Biological Diversity (state of play on the environment in Niger; 6th national report on Biological Diversity), that biological diversity is poorly taken into account in national policies and strategies. Since biological diversity is transversal, all stakeholders (those who manage it, use it, and impact it) must take part in its conservation and sustainable management.
To this end, actions to promote and appropriate biological diversity by actors must be undertaken at all levels. Among other things, these include:
- the valorization of biological diversity and associated traditional knowledge;
- better integration of biological diversity into sectoral policies and strategies, in particular in education programs and in national legislative frameworks.
